What is pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a key part of a comprehensive treatment plan. It includes assessment, prevention, and/or treatment of pelvic floor disorders by a trained pelvic floor physiotherapist.

The goal of therapy is to reduce symptoms and complaints related to pelvic floor dysfunction and to improve pelvic floor function.

Pelvic floor disorders vary in type, but common complaints include stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

First-line treatment for these conditions typically involves lifestyle changes and pelvic floor muscle training. This type of training is effective, cost-efficient, and non-invasive.

Pelvic floor training can help improve muscle strength and/or relaxation—or a combination of both—depending on the patient’s needs.

Because pelvic floor muscles are not visible, many women struggle to correctly activate them. A significant number are unable to perform effective contractions with enough strength to increase urethral closure pressure and ensure proper urethral support.

Success in pelvic floor muscle training begins with proper assessment and guided instruction in targeted exercises.

By combining exercise science, behavioral science, clinical research, and hands-on practice, pelvic floor physiotherapy can significantly improve women’s pelvic health.
